Memories and Traditions

This holiday season has been one of continuing traditions and creating memories.

  • For us, it starts with Thanksgiving, which we have with my mom and sister's family. We take kids to visit Santa Claus, creating a DVD for them to watch in the future. The visit helps us find out what our daughter wants for Christmas.

  • In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we attend local displays and exhibits. These include train setups (both model and large enough for kids to ride) , outdoor lighting exhibits, and museum events. We also read Christmas bedtime stories in the month of December. 'Twas the Night Before Christmas is our daughter's favorite.

  • This year we added a tradition from my childhood. On Christmas Eve, we drive around to check if Santa Claus is coming early to our neighborhood. After several possible sites, we arrive home and find that he has visited and delivered presents, which we open before our daughter goes to bed.

  • My in-laws host a post Christmas holiday gathering for their extended family every year. This year we hosted it at our house.

  • For New Year's Eve, we usually have a small party with neighbors, to avoid being out on the roads.
  • Hopefully, these are memories and traditions that our four year old daughter will remember and appreciate in the future.
